Tooth Extractions Q & A

When do I need a tooth extraction?

Usually, preserving your natural tooth is the best choice, but in some situations, you just can’t do so. There are several situations that may require tooth extraction, including:

  • Wisdom teeth that cause pain or other issues
  • Tooth trauma
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Extra teeth (crowded mouth)

In general, if your tooth is too damaged or decayed to remain in your mouth, or if you need to make more room in your mouth, a tooth extraction might be the next step.

How does tooth extraction work?

At Mission Dental, Dr. Trinh uses the gentlest tooth extraction methods possible. She specializes in atraumatic extraction and uses it whenever possible. You receive local anesthesia, usually via injections, to numb the tooth and all of the surrounding area.

Several types of sedation are also available to help you stay relaxed during your tooth extraction. The most common sedation options include nitrous oxide gas, oral pills or tablets, and intravenous (IV) sedation.

In atraumatic extraction, Dr. Trinh uses vertical force to remove the tooth, rather than horizontal force. Essentially, atraumatic extraction pulls the tooth out without wrenching it back-and-forth. This preserves your tooth socket, maintains the maximum amount of bone and tissue, and allows for smoother extraction and easier healing after procedures like wisdom teeth removal.

Atraumatic extraction is also particularly helpful when you’re getting dental implants because it maintains the bone you need to support the implant posts.

What is recovery from tooth extraction like?

Mission Dental gives you personalized aftercare guidelines to help you through recovery. Guidelines usually depend on the complexity and the number of extractions, but general instructions may include:

  • Liquid or soft food diet for a few days
  • Avoid hot or cold foods and liquids
  • Don’t drink from a straw
  • Mouth rinse with a saltwater solution
  • Don’t brush the extraction site
  • Apply clean gauze to control bleeding
  • Apply ice packs to your jaw for pain and swelling
  • Take prescribed medications as instructed

If you experience any unexpected problems after your tooth extraction, reach out to Mission Dental as soon as possible. Your long-term oral health is the top priority, so call the office if you have any concerns or questions.
